Sarah Brownlee

Benjamin Franklin5 O'Brien (GEORGE WASHINGTON4, ENOCH3, GEORGE2, ENOCH1) was born 1848 in Clay, Indiana and died in 1878 in Hood, Texas.   He married a widow,  Sarah (Sally) Josephine Fitzgerald Hart, May 31, 1869, in Lebanon, Laclede, Mo.   She was born May 25, 1846.  After B.F. died, Sally taught school and later married Andrew Jackson Brownlee.  She died on 23 June 1928 in Midland, Texas, and is buried near Hereford, Texas.

Sarah Brownlee with her grandson Cecil, daughter in law, Exie holding granddaughter Hazel at the Will O'Brien home in Dimmitt. After the Will O'Briens moved to Hereford, Sarah Brownlee, Hazel, Exie and Cecil O'Brien.

    Sara Josephine Fitgerald remarried a wagon maker named Brownlee and had a son Fred Brownlee in Hereford, Texas

 

His great grandchild George Van wrote, "Granddad was always very closed mouth about his father, so he was always a kind of a mystery man to us. No one ever know for sure when, where or how he died. We don't even know where he was buried."    The situation is the same in Will's side of the family.  

 

Both sides have stories about his dying in jail or prison of the bloody flux (amoebic dysentery).   John O'Brien tells of his father Will saying that Benjamin Franklin  was shot as he was crossing a river by a lawman.   Supposedly, he was with a gang of outlaws.   John says that his grandmother Brownlee always said that Ben wasn't an outlaw.

 

 Considering Benjamin Franklin's father's letter addressing his trial and lawyer, we can assume that one of the stories about him being on the wrong side of the law was true..

 

L. Lynn O'Brien wrote, "I got the feeling it was in East Texas too, but that was only a hunch.  I based this on the fact that there was probably still a lot of animosity over the mixed stands the Fitzgerald's took during the Civil War in that area.  I wrote Texas Prisons years ago trying to find out anything I could since the story goes he "died in prison of the bloody flux".  They had no record of him being incarcerated, so I figured it may have been in another state i.e.. Oklahoma, Missouri etc., but likely the "prison" was a county or city jail.  G.W. O'Brien's letter to his former dau.-in-law Sally Fitzgerald Brownley asks "who were Ben's enemies and why did they persecute him?" (approx. quote) That leads to speculation that MAYBE he might have had some help with his demise.  As to why he was arrested, I heard it was because he tried to "bribe a sheriff to set a relative free" that jibes with what you know.  I think I got that info. from the Fitzgerald book.  I heard another story that he had some horses rustled and got them back along with others that had been stolen, then got arrested for stealing them.  I don't put too much credence in the latter story and think the first is probably the most likely."

 

B.F. O'Brien's sons were successful and reputable.    Will owned a ranch in New Mexico where he branded the Moon Brand and called the ranch either White Lakes Ranch or Moon Ranch.    His brother George ran a ranch in Montana starting in 1957 with his son Pat on Moon Creek.

Note:   The Hines brothers lived in Pampa and operated a oil well servicing company called Hines and O'Brien with Will's children.

Worth, TX.

6.   Cecil Lynn7 O'Brien (WILL6, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN5, GEORGE WASHINGTON4, ENOCH3, GEORGE2, ENOCH1) was born 3/12/04 on a farm outside Dimmitt, TX and died in a car wreck west of Roswell, NM on November 9, 1953.  He married Betty Oliver b. 2/24/09 on March 9, 1928.   Betty's mother was Beta (Boots) Marquette Oliver, b. 11/8/1881.   Betty died April 23, 1965.

Cecil was very social redhead businessman who had great people skills.   The cowboys spoke of him being a great hand, as well.   He was equally at home with cowboys or governors.   As a young nephew, I remember feeling his excitement at seeing me when I walked into a room.

 

7.  Hazel7 Exie O'Brien (WILL6, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN5, GEORGE WASHINGTON4, ENOCH3, GEORGE2, ENOCH1) was born  November 2, 1905, on a farm outside Dimmitt, TX and died in Amarillo, TX.  She married Oliver Mark Oliver (brother of Betty Oliver and son of mother was Beta (Boots) Marquette Oliver, b. 11/8/1881).  Mark died February 23, 1957.

Cousin Lynn O'Brien wrote, "She was quite a gal and I regret that I hadn't had the opportunity to know her longer and better.  My two main recollections of her at the reunion were 1) when my cousin Joe Lynn O'Brien (Lysle Lynn "N" O'Brien's son) strolled in to the reunion with a 45 ACP strapped on and she said "Who's that?  I want to meet him."  and 2) when things started to drag a little said, "Let's get out of here and get a drink."  I knew she was OK and definitely part of this tribe."

 

Hazel was a red headed woman who loved her family and loved visiting.   She had a spark that people who met her didn't forget.   She spoiled me; so, I can not be objective about her.

 

8.  William Barnette (Pete)7 O'Brien (WILL6, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN5, GEORGE WASHINGTON4, ENOCH3, GEORGE2, ENOCH1) was born June 4, 1908, in Hereford, TX and died in Amarillo, TX, .  He married Maurine Spradley on April 11, 1936 b Jul 17, 1913 near Dallas, TX.

Pete was a dear man who suffered from the effects of polio his entire life.   He did not let his handicap hold him back and ran the family's oil business.

 

9. Fay7 Allene O'Brien (WILL6, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN5, GEORGE WASHINGTON4, ENOCH3, GEORGE2, ENOCH1) was born in Hereford Texas on April 10, 1910 and married James Arvis (Grub) Killough on August 9, 1929.  Fay died January 11, 1947

When any of the brothers or sisters spoke of Fay, their love for her came out.

Betty Jane made the best fudge in the world.   She was blunt (not that her siblings weren't) and warm.   She had a way of looking at her children or nieces and nephews that let them know they weren't getting away with anything, but none of them ever doubted her love.

O'Brien Reunion 2019

O'Brien Reunions continue every summer with 75 to 100 folks showing up.   Friday and Saturday afternoons, the family gather at Exie's cabin at the Palo Duro Club (now Fay and Bobby's---in front of tree on right).   The family has movies of a reunion at the PDC in 1949.   In this photo, the only boy able to carry on the O'Brien name from Will's family is appropriately William (Liam) who has the white shirt at the bottom of the stairs.   Photo taken by Tom Pickens who is on the far left.
