Note from Lynn

Rereading this, I think I remember that Dad's brother, nicknamed "Buster" was named Clyde and the horizontal double bars that Dad branded on the 'back side of the animal's leg' was actually on the butt.  When I was a kid (late teens & early 20's) I had 'quarter circle LO' registered in Custer County, Montana, which was a horizontal moon over LO.
 
An antic dote:  When we ranched on Moon Crk., SW of Miles City.  We had long-bodied yellow Herefords with horns longer than most that we had brought up from Texas.  (A holdover from Longhorn ancestry I presume).  Our neighbor, who owned a big chunk of Miles City, and who we didn't get along with, had short-bodied red Herefords with relatively short horns.  He branded a 'triangle hanging anchor'.  One day when we were riding the fences, we noticed two yellow long-bodied long horned cows on his side of the fence, away from the red cows and bawling at ours.  They had a triangle hanging anchor alright, but the anchor was a straight sided W instead of a rounded one like the rest of his stock.  We never pursued it, deciding that peaceful war was better than a shooting one.  :)
 

My granddad branded "Moon, Moon, 7" just like yours, but with a seven centered underneath the two moons.  He branded that I believe when he, my dad and Uncle "N" ranched south of Carlsbad, NM near the Black Canyon.  We lived on the ranch there when I was 4 and brother George Van was 5, then moved into town (Carlsbad), where brother, Truman Ellis was born (Feb 1946) and George attended 1st grade.  ("Tru" was named after cousin Truman Hines.  He now lives about 6 miles due east of me on Vashon Island.)  More about brands:  I believe we continued using the "Moon, Moon, 7" brand after we moved back to Wickett in 1946. I remember seeing it on horses and seeing the irons around the place.  We branded "bar w" (horizontal bar centered over W)  when we were on Moon Crk.  When bro. George and I were ca. 6 & 7 years old we had some 300 head of Herefords (the issue of stock given us by Granddad when we were born).  George and I branded "O bar";  letter "O" centered over a horizontal bar and earmarked "swallow fork in both ears".  Dad used various brand at various times.  He used to brand "PAT" in large letters across the side of cattle until someone convinced him he was overdoing it. At one point I think I remember him branding double horizontal bars on the back side of the animal's leg.
