Swamp Remuda

O'Brien Ranch

Five of the Reminic bred mares.

Rufus, Good Waltzn Jones, YoYo and Josh on a gather.

When you look back at American Quarter Horse foundation bloodlines, you see mares listed as JA Mare or RO Mare.   Both of these ranches had a reputation for producing great, usable ranch horses.   When we took over the RO Ranch (Swamp) in the mid eighties, the Lewis family used the Jog for mares.   They had two fantastic studs: Sonoita Blue and Goldfinger.

In producing using ranch horses, our first criteria is that the horses have a lot of cow and stamina.   After that, we look to disposition, speed and confirmation.   In addition, we would like easy traveling horses.   All horses are used for the daily ranch work and are naturally exposed to a lot of cattle.   We have found that it costs as much to keep bad horses as good and have chosen to keep great horses.

We believe that the way mares and their colts are handled contributes as much to the quality of our horses as the bloodlines.   We have an annual horse clinic to improve our skills just as we are improving the genetics.   We send fillies each year through the WT Horse Program.

A couple of years ago, we purchased a starved out gelding named Yo Yo.   The more we used him the more we were impressed by how much cow he has and his heart.    We looked at his papers and found that he was out of a stud called Rotchys Rocket, a Reminic son.   When we had a chance to buy mares out of Rotchys, we were excited.    We were even more thrilled when we found they were as well bred on the dam side.

For fifteen years, Corsino Cattle Company bought geldings from a neighboring ranch out of a stallion named Dude Lit.   They were fantastic ranch horses with lots of heart and athletic ability.   Unfortunately, the mares were sold and the blood line died out.   When we decided to build a remuda, we went out looking for mares out of Dude Lit.   Strangely, the only ones we found were in Virginia.   On the top side, they are out of Peppy Bingo and they are a great addition to our remuda.

As one can see, the mare remuda is very strong with top Doc Bar blood.   We have decided to go with studs without Doc Bar blood to try to get hybrid vigor as well as the strength of some other blood lines.

The O'Brien ranch is proud of our 98 model stud Good Waltzn Jones.   We purchased this stud based on his fine pedigree and confirmation.   He is a great, easy riding ranch horse with natural cow sense.

In 2007, we purchased TRR Iron Leo as a stud prospect.   A good looking gray colt, he has the disposition we are looking for and lots of promise.

The palomino stud Peppys Yellow Boy, an own son of  Peppys Boy 895, father of the '98 futurity winner and horse of the year Shania Cee, was bred to cut.   We have some fillies out of him, but we traded him in 2007.   His bottom side goes to Lance Jones, Dry Doc, Hollywood Gold and Senor George.   Two studs that helped make the great foundation JA remuda are on Peppys Yellow Boys papers:   Claude, Senor George's sire, and Hired Hand.

Periodically, the ranch sells well trained ranch horses.  At a price, any of our horses are for sale.  The ranch also does limited outside breeding.  If you are interested e-mail Sam or call (806) 779-2881.   Horses for sale.

In order to allow us to continue improving our herd, the O'Brien Ranch exchanges fillies and the use of studs with the JA Remuda.   Also see Sample JA bloodlines.
