Barnaby Eagan came to the United States as an indentured servant in 1746.  He arrived on the ship Delaware in 1746 at a port Philadelphia, PA.  He later lived on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Western Virginia until his death in 1779.  He was probably a little over 60 years of age when he died but the exact date of his birth in Northern Ireland is unknown at this time.

This note found:  William Humphreys assigns Barnaby Eagan (a servant from Ireland in the ship Delaware) to William Wheldon of Philadelphia, Victualler, for five years from June 5th, 1746.  Consideration L15: Customary Dues.

Records of Augusta Co. VA. 1745-1800, Vol. 1: 4th Tuesday in February, 1749 John Givens petitions that he be relieved as constable and one of three be put in his stead, viz. Thomas Story, James Craig, Joshua Stickleman.  John Davis, same, and nominates Barnibee Eagon or Samuel Odle, or Joshua Job. 19th October 1751 petitioners for road from Thorn’s Gap to Henry Netherton’s: Henry Netherton, Barnebas Agan, Elisha Job, Shadk Parlour, John Davis, William Bethell, William Whitson, Danial Stover.  28 August 1750 Bernard Agen added to list of tithables.  23 March 1753 Barnaby Agan qualified Ensign of Foot.

 

Chancer Court Records Frederick Co., VA:  Barnabas Egan being first sworn deposeth saith he was chain man when Mr. James Wood surveyed the narrow passage tract on the North River as well as he remembers they crossed the river at the narrow passage of the North side but how many chains chains they ran on the other side he can not recollect, but they ran up the river.  24 March 1770.

Virginia Colonial Soldiers:  At a court martial held 9 Oct 1761, the following were discharged:  William Whitson, Darby McCarty, Henry Netherton, and Banaby Hagan from Capt. Henry Spear’s Company.

 

Fredrick County, VA Deed Book 13, p. 24, 1 May 1769 – (Lease) between Jeremiah Odle of Frederick County to Barnaby Aigon of county aforesaid…consideration of Five Shillings….Tract of Land situate lying and being in said County…containing One Hundred Acres the same being part of a Larger Tract of four Hundred acres granted to said Jeremiah Odle by deed from the Proprietors Office the 16th March 1761…Rent of one pepper corn on Lady Day next.  Wit: None Jeremiah Odle Rec: 2 May 1769 book 13, p. 25, 2 May 1769 (Release) Between Jeremiah Odle of Frederick County & Leah his wife (to) Barnaby Aigen of the same place…consideration of Thirty Pounds….100 Acres (same as above). Shenandoah County, VA Order book 1772-1774:  At the town of Woodstock in the county of Dunmore the 6th day of May in the 12th year of Reign of our sovereign Lord George the 3rd bby the Grace of God and Great Britian, France and Ireland, King Defender of faith and cannoque Domini MDCCLXXII…p. 274, 25 Nov 1773, Ordered that Jeremiah Odell, Isaac Job, Samuel Denton and David Job…;view a road from Barnaby Eagan’s ford into the Dutch road by John McEnturf.

 

Fredrick County, VA Order Book 1781-1784:  On motion of James Fox a witness for Bernard Agon at the suit of Timothy Sisk, Jr…It is ordered that said Bernard pay him seventy five lbs. of tobacco for attending this court three days according to law.  On motion of Bernard Agan, Jr. a witness for Bernard Agon at the suit of Timothy Sisk, Jr ..ordered that said Bernard pay him seventy five lbs of tobacco for attending this court three days…according to law.

 

Shenandoah County, VA Deed Books, A, B, C, D 1772-1784, p. 121, 15 March 1775:  Know all men by these presents that I Barnaby Egan of Dunmore County, Yeoman..have ordained my trusty and loving friend George Whitson of above County and John McDowell of Roan County in providence of North Carolina my heir and Lawfull Attorneys… I have been informed that there is some person seated on that Tract of Land that was granted to me in the year 68 containing 400 acres…lying on the south fork of the Catawba River …whole powere strength and authority …to dispossess the said persons from the above mentioned premises…Wit:  Charles Whitson, Jonathan Odell Barnaby Eagen Rec: 25 April 1775.

 

Shenandoah County, VA Deed Books E, F, G, H 1784-1792, G-136, 24 Sept 1788:  (Lease) Between Jeremiah Whitson of County of Shenandoah to Nehemiah Wood of aforesaid…consideration of Fifty Pounds…A Certain piece parcel or Tract of Land…containing one hundred Acres the same being part of a larger Tract of Four hundred Acres granted to Jeremiah Odell by deed from Proprietors Office 16th of March 1761 and by him the said Jeremiah Odell sold and conveyed to Barnaba Eagan and Conveyed by deeds of L & R to Charles Whitson 22nd and 23rd days of August 1779 which tract of Land descended to sd. Jeremiah Whitson as heir at Law of sd Charles Whitson, dec’d…rent of one pepper corn on Lady Day next… Wit: None Jeremiah Whitson Rec: 25 Sep 1788.

 

Shenandoah County, VA Deeds M & N, 1799-1804, Minute Book 1774-1780:  Admin of the Estate of Barnaby Hagen Dec’d is granted un to Rachell Hagen.  She having made oath & entered into bond with George Witzell, Hen Nelson her security.  James McNeill, Alex. Mathews, Barny Hagen & James Odell or any 3 appointed said estate.  An inventory of his property was filed by Barnaby Eagan Jr. and Others.  It included two negroes, livestock, farm implements, household and wearing apparel.  Bk N-97, 26 July 1802 Land being sold mentions Charles Whitson deceased, who was assignee of Barnaba Eagan.  Jennifer Eagan states that on a 1776 Religious Dissenters’s Petition to the Virginia State Legislature the 37th name on the list is Barnabe Eagan, Senior.  Barnabas Eagan, Jr. married Susannah Whitson, who was a member of the Church of England.  This may be the reason that Rachel Eagan didn’t leave anything to her son, Barnabas, in her will.

 

Email from Brenda Schwall.  I found this document footnoted in “Pioneers of Old Frederick County, VA by Cecil O’Dell, Marceline, Missouri, Walsworth Publishing Co., 1995 p. 430. – On page 430 is an article regarding Barnaby Eagan which says, “Barnaby Eagan stated in a 23 March 1770 deposition that he was 70 and that he lived on the South side of the South River Shenandoah near 30 years”.  He claimed 200 acres within the 7,000 acre “South River Tract”. And was listed on 26 Jan 1735/36 as one of the settlements on the Hite.  McKay, Duff and Green 100,000 acre grant land. P. 1657, 1694 and 1797…….Later is says that , “ The 200 acres had been given to Barnaby Eagan by Robert McKay, Sr. “For faithfully serving him as a servant”.  There is more to the article if anyone is interested.  Signed Brenda Schwall…..
